Has anyone done much work with 3D programs, especially Google Sketchup, Blender, Milkshape, 3DS, Mineways etc? I'm just playing about with Sketchup and Mineways to put some designs on the new shop thing I created lol

Now this is a topic for me. I tend to use Pro/Engineer and google sketch up. Tried some others like maya, 3dmax etc. How do you normally use them hank? Like do you just design or do you make the model on a CNC router?

I've only ever made much use of 3DS and Milkshape 3D (don't laugh - it's actually not bad little prog for beginners). I just did simple things like a city flythrough thing in 3DS and a weird looking dancing/somersaulting Randy Marsh look-a-like in MS3D. God knows where the files are now though. I'll probably get into Blender at some time, as that seems to be the 3D world's answer to Gimp....incredible power (and probably learning curve) and zero cost. You can get a plugin from i.materialise.com for Google Sketchup that lets you export your models to them for 3D printing, but not tried it yet (only just signed up). Could be fun to make 3D physical models of some of the more awesome things on the server. Got the idea after seeing this on minecraftforums

I played around a little bit in Blender - 3D modelling isn't terribly exciting unless you're, like, writing a 3D game in Unity or something.

Blender. I had it, and got rid of it. There are some excellent models made in it, such as a ariel atom. I have been tempted to get a shapeways model made before.

For DT in my school I had to use Google Sketchup for a whole term. Everyone in my class was predicted as a GCSE Level of D; I was the only one however (not joking) predicted for an A* in my entire year. Predicted A* in Year 7 >:3

Jon, I feel sorry for your school. You had to use google sketch up when you could have got Pro/desktop for free.

Hank, to put it basicly, its the kids version of Pro/Engineer. It is free to schools, and comes with the many features of pro/engineer. Pro/Desktop has retired now, but it was replaced by naother program, unsure of its name though.

What were you thinking of making? Can you use Google Sketchup for that or just that Mineways thing?

I managed to reply with a blank post but I see I'm able to delete. While reading a comic tutorial I noticed the guy was using Google Sketchup for his backgrounds, so assumed it was quite quick and simple to use. I'm one of those people who downloads programs and never gets around to installing them though. Plus I think Cinema 4D could just as easily serve the same function (assuming you've used it before) and has a kind've comicy type render thing. It's probably easier to just hand draw the backgrounds yourself though.

Kewl, have you done much with C4D? I'm guessing there's a converter somewhere for getting stuff saved in whatever format (?) it uses to one of the more popular formats like 3DS/Maya/Blender etc, then another for getting that into Sketchup....if not directly from C4D itself.... My main motivation for mentioning Sketchup and Mineways is for producing stuff for the 3D printing shop Shapeways. Blender and Milkshape could also prove handy for when my indie-Dev efforts pickup a bit and I need a bunch of 3D assets producing. Although as a coder I don't feel remotely comfortable calling myself an artist. At the moment however I'm still mainly at the research and design stage of things before I can justify churning out much code - oh, and nobody say, "programmer art" EDIT: Interesting, looks like Unity3D (where I'm trying to do most of my coding) natively supports import of C4D files.
